With the transfer window slamming shut at 11pm last night, transfer speculation has transformed into a more retrospective pastime in today’s media.
Javi Garcia was the last player through the door on deadline day and with the Portuguese League not shown on terrestrial TV, you probably won’t have seen him in action much.
Fortunately Goal.com’s Peter Staunton knows plenty about him and reckons City have bagged one of Europe’s most promising midfielders.
“He’s a commanding, authoritative midfield player with aggression and relentless stamina at the base of midfield,” said the European football expert.
One player who didn’t end up joining City was Napoli’s Uruguayan hitman Edinson Cavani, despite rumours early on in the window.
That didn’t stop Napoli’s President having a bit of a dig at the club and city of Manchester when Cavani signed a new contract yesterday - according to the Daily Mail.
“At times marriages come to an end. Unfortunately Edi wants to go to England, to that cold city of Manchester, and there's a plane ready to take him there,” said Aurelio De Laurentiis at the opening to the press conference.
We hope none of you were fooled.
It’s understandable if in all of this transfer talk it’s slipped your mind that there’s a match today against QPR at 5.30pm.
Most papers lead understandable frame their previews with the context that this is the rematch of that incredible final day of last season, and QPR forward Jamie Mackie has been revealing his memories of the day to the Fulham Chronicle.
“We were gutted we didn’t hold City after leading 2-1,” said the man who scored QPR’s first goal on that day.
“But I was on the right wing, and near me our bench suddenly went mental.
“We didn’t get the job done – but Stoke did us a favour and we got lucky, and yeah it was weird when you lose and you’re celebrating.”
