Saturday 1^st September 1894

In their first game since re-establishing themselves as Manchester City, the Blues are beaten at local rivals Bury. The 4-2 defeat to the Shakers, who go on to become League Champions, means Joshua Parlby’s side have to wait another week to give the fledgling Blues a first league win. Monday 1^st September 2008

The signing of Robinho from Real Madrid sends disbelieving fans gathering outside Eastlands into jubilant celebration after one of the most exciting days in the club’s history. 

Only earlier that evening had the club’s takeover by Abu Dhabi United been confirmed and in order to announce their arrival, the club’s new owners splashed out a British record fee of £32.5m on the Brazilian playmaker.

Friday 1^st September 1989

Kaziu Deyna is killed in a car crash in California. The 1978 World Cup in Argentina created much excitement in England, particularly when it was rumoured some of the top names in the tournament might be heading here.  

City fans were delighted to learn that the Blues were on the trail of 102-times capped Polish World Cup captain Kaziu Deyna, a massive star of Iron Curtain football. Red tape and the player’s involvement in the Polish Army would initially delay the deal before a fee of £100,000 was agreed with Legia Warsaw. 

The Polish side asked City if they could pay the fee in the form of electronic goods such as copiers and fax machines, which they duly did. But though Deyna was undoubtedly a precocious talent, things never really ran smoothly during his time in Manchester. 

He was forced to look after his young soon alone with his wife hospitalised in Poland for a lengthy period and it wasn’t until he’d been with the club nine months at City that he finally found the back of the net. 

Despite this, the technique, skill and vision Deyna possessed made him a huge favourite with the City faithful and his first season return of six goals in eleven starts promised even better to come for the following campaign. 

Beset by injuries and off-field problems, however, Deyna missed half of the campaign because of one reason or and in January 1981, he left for San Diego in the NASL.
