Manchester City FC and club captain Vincent Kompany are delighted to announce their continuing support to a long-term partnership with SOS Children’s Villages in Beijing.
In a move that will have a positive effect on all SOS Children’s Villages across China, it follows the opening of the Etihad Airways MCFC Soccer School earlier this week, a collaboration extends MCFC’s focus on the China market.
Underlining the Blues’ commitment to the project, Kompany signed the partnership agreement in China today - an extension of an existing cooperation between MCFC and SOS Children’s Villages in Belgium.
Vincent, who also revealed he'd agreed a new six-year contract with City earlier in the day, has been an ambassador for SOS in his own country for more than six years - he also presented a personal cheque to the charity to mark this occasion.
SOS and MCFC have engaged in a three-year partnership, which will aid the training of 120 SOS staff during that period.
The schooling will take place at the SOS Mother Training Centre in Beijing and will have a direct effect on the qualitative care of more than 1270 children in the 10 SOS Children’s Villages in China.
The partnership also ensures that MCFC will have a legacy that continues long after the Club departs to begin their defence of the Premier League title.
SOS Children’s Villages is a world-renowned organisation, active in 133 countries and territories. With China’s unique demographic landscape, SOS Children’s Village has an important role in the Beijing community.
Following dramatic economic growth, in recent years increasing numbers of families have migrated to Beijing, resulting in a rise in the number in recent years and as a result the number of orphaned and abandoned children has risen.
SOS saw a need for their services and the municipality of Beijing provided a suitable five-acre site which is where MCFC will focus their resources.
“I am proud to have been involved with SOS Children’s Villages for many years and feel privileged to be able to extend my support to such a worthy cause in China,” said Kompany.
“All around the world there are underprivileged children living in desperate need.
SOS gives these children a chance in life, and it’s vitally important to me to do everything I can to help raise the profile of their work
“I am delighted that the Club have joined me in helping to support them, and together we can make a real difference to the lives of children all around the world.”
